    Development of a Coding Instrument to Assess the Quality and Content of Anti-Tobacco Video Games

    Previous research has shown the use of electronic video games as an effective method for increasing content knowledge about the risks of drugs and alcohol use for adolescents. Although best practice suggests that theory, health communication strategies, and game appeal are important characteristics for developing games, no instruments are currently available to examine the quality and content of tobacco prevention and cessation electronic games. This study presents the systematic development of a coding instrument to measure the quality, use of theory, and health communication strategies of tobacco cessation and prevention electronic games. Using previous research and expert review, a content analysis coding instrument measuring 67 characteristics was developed with three overarching categories: type and quality of games, theory and approach, and type and format of messages. Two trained coders applied the instrument to 88 games on four platforms (personal computer, Nintendo DS, iPhone, and Android phone) to field test the instrument. Cohen's kappa for each item ranged from 0.66 to 1.00, with an average kappa value of 0.97. Future research can adapt this coding instrument to games addressing other health issues.     Intersections of Vision, Practice, and Context in the Development of Student Teachers as Reading Teachers for Students of Diverse Backgrounds

    The well-documented achievement gap and common cultural mismatch between teachers and their students underscore the need for culturally responsive teachers. Students of diverse backgrounds need teachers whose visions of teaching reading result in high-quality educational experiences for all students. As teacher education programs strive for ways to support preservice reading teachers to be more culturally responsive, it is important to understand how a vision of teaching develops and then intersects with actual classroom practice of teaching reading to students of diverse backgrounds. From a sociocultural perspective and using qualitative case study methods, this dissertation explored the visions of five student teachers as they taught reading to students of diverse backgrounds in the context of urban classrooms, including the district-mandated balanced literacy program. Through classroom observations, interviews, and a review of documents, I examined the intersections of vision, practice, and context in the participants' development as reading teachers. Additionally, I developed a checklist of Culturally Responsive Indicators and Strategies to assess the extent to which cultural responsiveness emerged in the five student teachers' vision and practice. The five case studies strengthened research findings that previous attitudes and beliefs, educational experiences, and intercultural experiences (or the lack there of) do influence the development of visions about teaching reading. The individuals experienced complex intersections as they made meaning of their student teaching experience. In the cross-case analysis, three major intersections of vision, practice, and context emerged: classroom management, teaching balanced literacy, and the students' cultures. The conceptual framework developed for this study showed that one of the intersecting elements of vision, practice, or context can be dominant for an individual, with implications of different models for teacher education. The data suggested that a context-dominant student teacher might be most likely to move toward cultural responsiveness. From a checklist of 25 strategies, limited use of culturally responsive strategies was found, suggesting that a diverse context alone does not necessarily lead to cultural responsiveness.     Rapid overview of systematic reviews of nocebo effects reported by patients taking placebos in clinical trials

    Background Trial participants in placebo groups report experiencing adverse events (AEs). Existing systematic reviews have not been synthesized, leaving questions about why these events occur as well as their prevalence across different conditions unanswered. Objectives (1) To synthesize the evidence of prevalence of AEs in trial placebo groups across different conditions. (2) To compare AEs in trial placebo groups with AEs reported in untreated groups within a subset of randomized trials. Search methods We searched PubMed for records with the word “nocebo” in the title and “systematic” in any field. We also contacted experts and hand-searched references of included studies. Study eligibility We included any systematic review of randomized trials where nocebo effects were reported. We excluded systematic reviews of non-randomized studies. Participants and interventions We included studies in any disease area. Study appraisal and synthesis methods We appraised the quality of the studies using a shortened version of the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews tool (AMSTAR) tool. We reported medians and interquartile ranges (IQRs) of AEs. Among the trials within the review that included untreated groups, we compared the prevalence of AEs in untreated groups with the prevalence of AEs in placebo groups. Results We identified 20 systematic reviews. These included 1271 randomized trials and 250,726 placebo-treated patients. The median prevalence of AEs in trial placebo groups was 49.1% (IQR 25.7–64.4%). The median rate of dropouts due to AEs was 5% (IQR 2.28–8.4%). Within the 15 of trials that reported AEs in untreated groups, we found that the AE rate in placebo groups (6.51%) was higher than that reported in untreated groups (4.25%). Limitations This study was limited by the quality of included reviews and the small number of trials that included untreated groups. Conclusions and implications of key findings AEs in trial placebo groups are common and cannot be attributed entirely to natural history. Trial methodologies that reduce AEs in placebo groups while satisfying the requirement of informed consent should be developed and implemented

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.
